Woman loses baby to stranger

A 22-year-old woman from Kwekwe lost her one-week-old baby to a stranger on Wednesday in what police suspect to be a case of kidnapping.
The victim, Rumbidzai Gunhu, was returning home from Kwekwe District Hospital after a post-natal check-up when the tragedy unfolded.
According to Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, Gunhu, who resides in Mbizo, was approached by an unknown woman who offered to assist by carrying the infant.
"After leaving the post-natal care unit, Gunhu encountered an unidentified female adult who offered to accompany her home, assisting by carrying the baby," Mahoko said.
The suspect reportedly stopped and handed Gunhu a ZiG20 (a $20 note), instructing her to purchase freezes at a nearby shop.

When Gunhu returned a few minutes later, the woman and the baby were gone," Mahoko explained.
Gunhu searched the area but could not locate the suspect or her baby. She subsequently reported the matter to the police.
Police have launched an investigation and are urging anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect or the recovery of the infant to come forward.
"We appeal to members of the public to assist us with any information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect and the baby. Please report to your nearest police station," Mahoko added.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of women and children, particularly in public spaces. Authorities are advising parents to remain vigilant and cautious when accepting help from strangers.
This case has left the Kwekwe community in shock as they pray for the safe recovery of the infant. Police investigations are ongoing.
